Who we are:
Agora for Life is a young organization, established by caring people from civil society, from the desire to move one step beyond, from individual activities to concerted actions, with a stronger impact. Two of the founders decided that after more than a year of individual activities dedicated to the environment (under different auspices), to use their experiences accumulated as representatives of civil society in several activities to dedicate to achieving their goals within an organization. So Agora for Life was born.
History:
The founders of Agora for Life are people concerned about our common future, dedicated to environmental preservation, advocacy activities and social justice, with the goal to raise awareness within civil society regarding the environmental impacts in certain areas, to plead for divestment and respect for our Planet, and to encourage people to get involved in preserving our common planet. The founders come from different environmental backgrounds: law, geography, engineering, and are putting their experience together in the service of communities.

Vision:
We encourage and believe in preservation and support of European and universal cultural values, in environmental advocacy and consultancy, in training and interdisciplinary debates, in cultural events. Our aim is to offer space and visibility to all ideas regarding the interactions between society and environment, a serious challenge which requires the application of several fields ( earth science, life, nature, social and human sciences, technical sciences) in order to generate genuine, creative solutions, compatible with our desired results.
Our involvement concerns environmental protection, divestment and alternative solutions, sustainable development, social justice, supporting and preservation of the European and international cultural heritage.
The world is facing a dramatic future: climate change and the energy crisis are the most important medium- and long-term threats. According to scientists, in order to have at least a 50% chance of keeping warming below 2 °C throughout the twenty-first century ( the maximum level that global temperature could rise without significantly affecting life on our planet) , half of the fossil fuels should remain in the ground. According to the International Energy Agency, two thirds of all proven fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground if the world is serious about avoiding dangerous climate change, report released today.
Other studies talk about the fact that the consumption of fossil fuels should end by 2050 and we should produce exclusively green energy, which means, for our continent, an enormous paradigm shift in the energy system. Our energy should be based, in the near future, on autonomous production of renewable energy by communities. Yet fossil fuel companies not only plan to extract and sell their existing reserves but are exploring ever more sensitive territory to find new ones, thus ruining any chance of securing a safe planet.
We should not forget that there are other greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, some more powerful than CO2, such as methane, and we should not focus only on one type of hydrocarbons- for instance coal- ignoring the others, and the question should not be put between which type is more dangerous for global warming, but to emphasize that all hydrocarbons ( conventional as well as unconventional) contribute significantly to the problem and none of them can be the solution in the fight against global warming.
The responsibility belongs to each of us, to rise awareness and to influence the political decision in the right, green direction, in order to insure our future.
We support the right of communities to choose their sustainable energy sources and to develop healthy consumption patterns that will lead to sustainable societies. We aim to work with local communities, with traditional farmers, in order to achieve a natural, sustainable development and to give up the modern economic system, which is not able to guarantee the needs of mankind. The globalization process asks a price to be paid by local communities, makes a few corporations extremely powerful and destroys local traditions and lifestyle. We should reconsider our global system and help communities in becoming self-sustainable, with respect for local traditions and for land.
The new system should serve the people and mitigate the climate crisis, to ensure the transition from fossil fuels, and to support an economy that serves both people and the planet.
